Tayside organisations invited to discuss reusable menstrual products

Zero Waste Scotland is inviting community groups, businesses and third-sector organisations in Perth and Tayside to find out more about reusable menstrual products so they can deliver their own awareness sessions.

18 Oct 19

It is estimated that the average woman will dispose of 11,000 period products in her lifetime. To tackle this one aspect of our throwaway society, Zero Waste Scotland is planning a reusable period products campaign later this year, supported by Scottish Government and European Regional Development Funding.

The free cascade training event, on Friday 25 October, will give people the chance to learn about the environmental impacts of disposable versus reusable options and the perceived barriers around switching. It will also provide an insight into the upcoming national campaign, including extensive consumer research on reusable period products.

Catherine Bozec, Consumer Campaigns Manager, Zero Waste Scotland said:

“Disposable menstrual products are just one strand of our throwaway society yet, sadly, they can be found polluting Scotland’s oceans and the wider environment. The reusable menstrual products campaign will have a significant impact, especially as a huge number of products are flushed down the toilet in Scotland every day.

“We want to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of reusable period products and help women feel empowered to make the right choice for them. That’s why we are holding the event in Perth to speak with community groups; this will enable them to get the facts and help spread the word further.”

The event is open to community groups, third sector organisations, social enterprises and other businesses. On the day, organisations will be able to network with others in the area.
