Four Scottish Schools Win ‘Don't Be Afraid of Your Leftovers!’ Schools' Recipe Competition

Four Scottish schools have today been named winners of the 'Don’t be afraid of your leftovers' recipe competition, which has been run in partnership between Zero Waste Scotland, Good Family Food (Quality Meat Scotland) and Business in the Community Scotland on behalf of Food For Thought

With food waste a 1.35 billion tonnes annual problem in Scotland, the three agencies teamed up to host a Halloween-themed competition in a bid to teach children about the frightful amount of food wasted in Scotland every year. Over 100 schools from the Food for Thought programme were invited to enter the competition to create a recipe using up leftovers.

As a result, four individual pupils and classes were selected for their spooktacular recipes:

  1. Miss Thomson’s P7 class from Alexandra Parade Primary School won with Creepy Carrot Cookies.
  2. Alex Ferguson, from St Paul’s High School, won with Spooky Sausage Kebabs with Grim Graveyard Salad.
  3. Maisie Shaw and Aisling Duncan from Taynuilt Primary School, won with Scabby Fruit Crumble Crunch.
  4. Michael Halleron from Granton Primary School, won with Red Lentil and Quorn Lasagne with Pumpkin Seed Face.

The pupils were presented with their certificates by chef Paul Wedgwood, from Edinburgh’s Wedgwood the Restaurant, at a special event on Friday 27 October, where Paul also did a cooking demo with the children.

Pupils Maisie Shaw (10) P6 and Aisling Duncan (11) P7 from Taynuilt Primary School, said:

'It was great fun creating the recipe. We felt like we were doing something to help the environment. We both looked to see what was lying around at home as part of our homework challenge to try and use up leftovers. We had been out picking brambles and made jam and sauce but we had lots left over and they would be wasted so we thought of putting them in our very own recipes.'

The recipes were judged by representatives from Good Family Food (Quality Meat Scotland), Business in the Community Scotland and Zero Waste Scotland on the following criteria: Creativity – was the recipe new? How does this recipe save food from the bin? Taste and feasibility – will the recipe work in practice? Is it nutritious and healthy? Will it be good to eat? Fearless use of leftovers – what food are you using up and understanding why it’s important to save food?

Paul Wedgwood, owner and chef of Wedgwood the Restaurant, Edinburgh, said:

'It’s important we teach children the positive message about how we can make the most of the food we love and how to use up leftover ingredients in new meals. Kids love Halloween so what better way to bring to life this issue and have some fun!'

The competition which ran from 1 September until 6 October was first announced at the launch event of the Food for Thought’s Phase 5 at Celtic Park in Glasgow. The winning teams won specially made 'Don’t be afraid of your leftovers' aprons, recipes hosted on the Love Food Hate Waste website and goodie bags from Quality Meat Scotland.

'Food waste is a major issue in Scotland and educating future generations about this problem is a major priority for us. This partnership was a great way to engage schools across Scotland and bring to life the concept of food waste and engage the children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy learning. Projects like this are vital as we work towards Scotland’s ambitious target to reduce the nation’s food waste by 33% by 2025.'

Food waste facts - Commonly wasted foods in Scotland include fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy and meat and fish. Meat and fish are the most expensive items wasted, with £130 million worth thrown out each year. Veg and salad accounts for £150 million worth of food thrown out as waste each year, while fresh fruit accounts for £79 million. Wasted bread amounts to £49 million a year with over 2 million slices of bread being binned each day, while £26 million worth of milk is poured down the sink per year.

About Food For Thought – Business in the Community Scotland

A partnership between Scottish Government, Education Scotland and BITC, the Food for Thought programme aims to involve pupils in nursery, primary and secondary schools in food related projects, which will encourage healthier eating habits, and provide a better understanding of the importance to the Scottish economy of jobs in the food and drink industry.

Pupils learn about sustainable food production, by growing their own produce, cooking and trying out new recipes and gaining an appreciation of the value of locally produce food and drink. In addition, the interdisciplinary projects develop their numeracy, presentation and communication skills and encourage them to learn more about Scottish heritage.

Business in the Community Scotland’s role is to provide ongoing support and relevant business links during the implementation of Food For Thought by partnering with local schools with local businesses in imaginative and stimulating workshops that are mutually beneficial. So far 100% of the businesses involved in the Food For Thought project have had a positive experience in school.
