Food Waste Prevention Week to help Inverurie businesses cut waste and save money

Businesses in Inverurie can get free support to cut out food waste and save money during Food Waste Prevention Week - a week of training, events and workshops being held between 20 - 23 February 2018.

Scotland has a target to reduce food waste by 33% by 2025. As a nation, in 2013 we produced 1.35 million tonnes of food waste at a big cost to the economy and to businesses. It is estimated that £166 million could be saved through food waste prevention in the hospitality and food services sector alone (2).

The events are organised by experts from Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient Scotland programme, as part of a nationwide drive to reduce food waste, and are being delivered in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council, and backed by funding from the Scottish Government and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficiency Programme is funded by the Scottish Government and European Regional Development Fund to help small and medium sized businesses become more efficient. Since the programme began in 2013, it has helped organisations in Aberdeenshire to identify over £1 million worth of yearly savings by reducing waste and cutting energy and water bills (1).

The week kicks off with a webinar to launch an exciting new initiative that will allow Inverurie businesses to distribute left over food to the local community and local charities, instead of binning it. The webinar will be broadcast live at 11:00 – 12:00 on 20 February.

Inverurie businesses are then invited to join a half-day food waste prevention training workshop. The workshop will share latest techniques and knowledge and provide delegates with valuable new skills that will help them tackle food waste. The workshop will be held at JG Ross Bakers, Inverurie, on the Wednesday 21 February, 10:00 – 13:30.

Workshop attendees will also hear about successful local businesses that have already reduced waste and are now enjoying big savings. And they will find out about the free support available from the Resource Efficient Scotland programme including one-to-one business support, interest free loans, and grants of up to £100,000 to fund waste prevention projects.

Other activities during Inverurie Food Waste Prevention Week include a ‘What’s in your kitchen’ cookery demonstration and tasting session at Wyness Hall, on 22 February 08:00 to 20:00. The session will provide tips to help Inverurie locals make the most of the food in their fridge, freezer and cupboards.

Food waste can have a big cost for businesses, but with research suggesting that up to 75% of this could be avoided, handling food more efficiently can unlock big savings.

“For businesses that have done all they can to prevent food waste, we’re particularly excited to be able to introduce the opportunity of redistributing surplus, edible food to those who can use it.”

Inverurie Food Waste Prevention Week is part of Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient Circular Economy Accelerator Programme, which will invest £29 million in Lowlands and Uplands Scotland in resource efficiency projects until December 2019, thanks to support from the European Regional Development Fund.
