Communications Officer (Media and PR)


Zero Waste Scotland is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Communications Officer to join our busy media and PR team, where you will contribute to initiatives that engage the media and appeal to our audiences across a range of channels - amplifying our essential messages and campaigns to help bring about a zero waste future, while furthering awareness of the Zero Waste Scotland brand.

You will play a crucial part in raising the profile of the organisation, communicating the organisation’s messages in a changing landscape, and telling its story to a wide-ranging audience – political, business, and consumer.

Working as part of the communications team, the role will support the Communications Lead (Media and PR) to run an effective press office, developing proactive media initiatives and content, briefing Zero Waste Scotland staff, and contributing to outstanding work which resonates with our audiences, across the full mix of channels.

The role includes working with peers, Communications Officers (PR & Media, Digital and Social Media) to drive engaging content across our digital platforms, so digital experience would be advantageous, though is not essential.

The ideal candidate

To be successful in this role you will be a committed, adaptable and collaborative individual with experience of working in a PR and/or communications environment, in particular in a press office role. You will have a good understanding of the media landscape in Scotland and existing relationships with journalists within. You will be adept at handling media enquiries, briefing Zero Waste Scotland colleagues and senior staff, and working collaboratively.

You will have great communications skills and be confident in producing high-quality written outputs including press releases, articles, briefings, Q&As and social media content, translating sometimes complex information into appealing messages and content that resonate with our audiences across the range of communications platforms.

You will take an organised approach to planning your work, contributing to planning media schedules, supporting staff with media bids and interviews, and updating and maintaining logs, records, and files.

Salary and benefits

£30,913 (pay range is £30,913 - £33,541)

Location:  Stirling  

This role is based in our Stirling office located next to Stirling railway station and is conveniently accessed from across central Scotland.  We are leading by example in reducing our carbon footprint by embracing permanent home working and actively encourage this for colleagues where practicable. There will be times for business needs that you are required to attend the office or a client location (normally within the Central Belt of Scotland), therefore applicants should live within a daily commutable distance of Stirling.
