Venture Jam

Zero Waste Scotland is proud to support VentureJam - a unique, free opportunity for 40 young people in Scotland that will see teams developing fresh ideas that embrace the digital world to solve real world challenges.

For VentureJam 2019, the focus of these real world challenges is food waste.

In 2019, an estimated 987,890 tonnes of food and drink in Scotland will be wasted – and this is impacting on our climate.

Food waste contributes significantly to climate change because of all the resources and energy that goes into growing and making the food in the first place. If wasted food is then sent to landfill, the impacts are even worse as this produces and emits methane, one of the most damaging greenhouse gases. In the short-term, methane is many times worse than carbon dioxide.

Scotland is leading by example in tackling climate change.  The Scottish food waste reduction target, the first of its kind in Europe, and Food Waste Reduction Action Plan aim to cut food waste by a third by 2025. This will put Scotland at the forefront of global action to tackle food waste. Concerted actions, both voluntary and binding, will help both businesses and households achieve these savings as well as cumulative positive impacts for people and the planet.

…Can you help to make our ambition a reality?
