Recycling volunteers needed for Festival 2014

Zero Waste Scotland is calling for volunteers to help visitors to Glasgow 2014 events recycle right

21 Jul 14

Zero Waste Scotland is offering Glasgow residents the chance to be part of the Festival 2014 events running alongside the Commonwealth Games, by volunteering to help visitors recycle correctly at the Glasgow Green Live Zone, which will host a huge range of activities and sporting events.

Organisers at the Glasgow Green Live Zone are aiming to recycle as much waste as possible by providing separate recycling facilities for different types of materials, and are looking for volunteers to chat to visitors about recycling and help ensure the right things go in the right bins. Glasgow Green will be at the main hub of Festival 2014, and will host parties for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, an exciting mix of family activities, music, comedy, dance, craft and ceilidh, plus live sport on three days as the start and finish point for the Marathon, Cycling Time Trial and Cycling Road Race.

Volunteers will have the chance to be part of all of this amazing action, and getting involved is easy as no previous knowledge or experience is required. All training will be provided and volunteers will also receive a uniform and expenses for refreshments. Zero Waste Scotland is looking for volunteers who can give four hours of their time per shift and multiple shifts are available.

Zero Waste Scotland Director Iain Gulland said: “The Commonwealth Games and Festival 2014 are once-in-a-generation events in Scotland, and this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of efforts to make them as sustainable as possible. There will be a huge drive to recycle as much waste as possible and we’re looking for friendly and enthusiastic people to help out at the recycling stations, chat to people about the benefits of recycling and direct them to the right bins.”

The Glasgow Green Live Zone will be hosting events for the duration of the Commonwealth Games, from 23 July through to 3 August, and there are volunteering opportunities on each day. Volunteers can sign up by going to www.zerowastescotland.org.uk
